About the Company
Our client is a fast-growing, direct-to-consumer subscription supplement business.
Role Overview
This is a Data Analyst role designed to become the internal source of truth for the business, owning day-to-day analysis connecting customer acquisition, e-commerce, subscription retention, merchandising, profitability, forecasting, and inventory planning. This person will initially work closely with the SVP of Growth, e-commerce leadership, the SVP of Operations, an outsourced CFO, and the executive team to improve decision-making and reduce the amount of time senior leaders spend collecting, reconciling, and interpreting data. This is not a passive reporting role. The analyst will be expected to identify opportunities, surface risks, prioritize areas for action, and help the organization make better decisions faster.
What They'll Lead
Marketing Analytics
The first priority of this role is supporting the growth and e-commerce leadership team by shortening the feedback loop between testing, performance, and decision-making.
- Build reporting that helps the growth team prioritize the tests, offers, channels, landing pages, and creatives most likely to improve performance
- Identify underperforming tests earlier so the business can stop wasting time and budget on initiatives that are unlikely to produce the best results
- Analyze a monthly marketing budget in the low millions and identify opportunities to improve efficiency
- Track blended CAC as well as CAC by channel, product, campaign, offer, creative, and landing page
- Build a reliable view of CAC payback period by product
- Analyze conversion rate by landing page, offer, traffic source, device, creative, and customer type
- Compare blended performance with channel-level and cohort-level performance
- Determine which channels are producing the most valuable customers, rather than simply the lowest-cost first orders
- Help the growth team understand the incremental impact of each additional dollar of spend
- Run scenarios showing how changes in CAC, conversion rate, retention, and average order value affect revenue and profitability
Customer Economics and CAC Thresholds
The analyst will help the company move beyond broad averages and understand the economics of specific customers and cohorts.
- Calculate customer lifetime value by product, channel, campaign, offer, and acquisition cohort
- Build contribution-margin-based lifetime value models rather than relying only on gross revenue
- Determine cash payback periods by customer segment and acquisition source
- Establish how much the company should be willing to spend to acquire different types of customers
- Analyze whether specific high-value customer cohorts justify materially higher acquisition costs based on retention, repeat purchases, cross-sell behavior, and margin
- Identify where current blended assumptions are hiding profitable growth opportunities or unprofitable customer acquisition
- Model the effect of discounts, promotions, bundles, and subscription offers on long-term customer economics
- Help leadership determine the true efficient dollar of marketing spend
Subscription and Retention Analytics
Because the company is subscription-driven, the Data Analyst will be responsible for understanding and forecasting recurring customer behavior.
- Build and maintain subscription cohort reporting
- Track first renewal, second renewal, monthly retention, churn, skips, pauses, cancellations, and reactivations
- Analyze retention by product, channel, campaign, offer, subscription cadence, and acquisition cohort
- Identify changes in retention early and quantify their downstream impact
- Analyze cancellation and refund reasons alongside customer behavior
- Determine which acquisition sources produce the strongest long-term subscribers
- Identify opportunities to improve subscription cadence, save flows, win-back programs, and retention communications
- Forecast future subscription revenue based on active subscribers, expected renewals, churn, skips, and reactivations
- Connect changes in retention to revenue, inventory, cash flow, and marketing-spend decisions
Profitability and Contribution Margin
The analyst will ensure the business understands the true profitability of its growth, not simply top-line revenue.
- Build gross-margin reporting by product, SKU, bundle, channel, and customer cohort
- Build contribution-margin reporting that incorporates product cost, fulfillment, freight, discounts, refunds, payment processing, shipping, and marketing spend
- Analyze profitability by channel, product, campaign, offer, and customer type
- Quantify how changes in CAC, conversion, retention, pricing, and product mix affect profitability
- Help determine whether growth in each channel is economically attractive
- Partner with finance and growth leadership to establish clear thresholds for profitable acquisition
- Support budgeting, scenario planning, and cash allocation decisions
Revenue and Business Forecasting
This person will reduce the forecasting burden currently placed on leadership and create a more scalable planning process.
- Build and maintain monthly, quarterly, and full-year revenue forecasts
- Forecast new customer revenue, subscription revenue, repeat-purchase revenue, marketplace revenue, and other channel revenue
- Incorporate marketing spend, CAC, conversion rate, retention, product launches, seasonality, and channel growth into forecasts
- Run base, upside, and downside scenarios
- Compare actual performance with forecasts and explain material variances
- Continuously improve forecast accuracy
- Move the company away from completing forecasts only near the end of each month
- Provide leadership with an updated view of expected performance throughout the month and quarter
- Model how changes in performance marketing efficiency affect the broader financial outlook
- Support board and investor forecasting needs with clear, defensible assumptions
Inventory Demand Planning
The Data Analyst will serve as the analytical bridge between growth, operations, and finance.
- Build demand forecasts by product and SKU
- Connect paid marketing plans, customer acquisition, subscription renewals, repeat purchases, channel demand, and product launches to inventory requirements
- Track weeks of inventory on hand
- Model the financial impact of holding different levels of inventory
- Identify potential stockouts, excess inventory, and working-capital risks early
- Help determine how much inventory should be purchased and when
- Compare forecasted product demand against actual sell-through
- Improve inventory forecast accuracy over time
- Analyze how changes in retention, CAC, conversion, and product mix affect inventory demand
- Create a shared planning model used by growth, operations, and finance
- Ensure inventory decisions are not made independently from the company's revenue and acquisition forecasts
Executive, Board, and Investor Reporting
The Data Analyst will own the reporting infrastructure required going forward. Typical outputs include a daily revenue dashboard, weekly growth report, subscription retention dashboard, marketing performance scorecard, product and merchandising performance dashboard, inventory demand forecast, monthly cohort analysis, monthly and quarterly revenue forecast, CAC payback and lifetime value reporting, contribution margin reporting, and board and investor reporting.
